Religion with Science

Religion refers to a group of people who follow an ideology of believing in ideas based on some supernatural entity that is superior to mankind. There are a lot of religions followed by various groups of people in the world. But the basic main idea of believing in God or gods is the nexus of all. God is like hope. It is estimated that people who believe in god remain more satisfied in their lives. They tend to be happier, have an optimistic approach towards life, and have good morals. The concept of reward in the afterlife makes people more ethical and keeps them in human boundaries.

It is a commonly asked question that whether people created god or really there is the God who created people?  Just if we do a logical approach then religious people saying is that there’s nothing in the world created by itself. If we take a common layman example to support this idea then it is somehow near to truth like there’s really someone who has to make something before it came into existence like a painting needs a painter who painted it, a table needs a carpenter to give it a proper shape.

If we talk about atheists then they tend to neglect this whole idea of “God/gods”. The basic ideology of them is we just are a part of nature. Nature came into existence and will end all by itself. We are created by no one and we will not have any afterlife.

Science is based on observations. It is the name of basing hypothesis doing experiments and then approving something to become a law. Science is like evolving in nature from the beginning of its existence. One can’t say anything is persistent in science. It is a study that is required to change.

From the beginning of its existence to the end many scientific theories like flat Earth theories, believing earth is fixed in the center of the universe before Nicolas Copernicus’s ideas, Darwin theories have been approved and disapproved.

New logics, new ideas, new observations are providing a new science each and every day. The earliest ideas of science were given by Ancient Egypt eras and then Greek methodologists and travel toward the Middle Age Muslims and at last the western Europeans. The history of science is a whole journey from becoming “natural philosophy “to “natural sciences”.

Science is never perfect because it didn’t come into being to be perfect. The beauty of science is in its flaws which makes humans more questions about their existence about the world around them.

If we do a comparison of science and religion then first we must have to know that religion is something that never changes. Its roots are orthodox. While science is a knowledge of consistently changing things. The turn-up of new ideas leads to the total destruction of old theories. While in religion at least the basic roots are always the same. In a great number of religions if we focus on the main and largest four religions followed by people in the world including Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. The basics of these religions never changed from the day of their existence in the world.

The comparison of relating science with religions in the world was first started by early philosophers and theologians. Science never tells us about the morals and ethics of living in a society. It gives us a brief knowledge about how? While religion is something that is related to why?  Science proves to us how all the possible things came into being their existence, the reasoning, the mathematics behind all that. While religion is all about why there is a need for creation?  Why things are like they are.

In the 1960s Ian Barbour tried to give four modules about relating religion and science. The first one is about conflicts that science and religion totally condemn each other. Religion says that humans are created by God but science gives us a concept of evolution. The second is all about independence that science and religion are two different and totally independent things we can’t merge them. They have different methods of implying things in different domains. For instance, it is to be in Christianity that Jesus was born to Virgin Mary which is in other religions like Islam too but science totally disapproves of this idea. Both have their own explanations that are independent and have a separate basis.

The third one relates to Dialogue that science and religion might not be conflicting but questioning each other’s hypothesis. Francis Bacon argued that it’s a God-given right to explore nature. Fourth module states about integration that the teachings of religion and science overlap. Like evolution, the theory provides religion and the idea that God is creative and constantly improving beings. This module emphasizes the similarities between religion and science like in Quran it is stated “We created you in pairs” (Quran 78:7).  Science proves that there are males and females created for each other.

Scientists are considered to be intellectual people who have knowledge more than ordinary men, who believe in facts and logic based on proper research. It is to be believed that scientists can never be religious but that’s not the matter.

Research shows that almost 40% of scientists are religious in the USA and in the elite class of scientists almost 7% of them believe that there must be someone who creates all the Universe. Some supernatural power. It’s interesting that most successful scientists in the world pray to God.  Many Muslims, Christian scholars worked a lot in the field of science which led to the modern sciences. Robert Boyle was a theologian and has a great name in the history of chemistry. Boyle’s law was one of his distinctive works. John Ray attempted to provide the description of Biological species. He was a pure Christian and was the author of the book” The Wisdom of God Manifested in the Works of the Creation (1691) “.

Al-Khwarizmi was the father of algebra. Jabir bin Hayan has a lot of work in the establishment of the basics of chemistry. No-one can deny the discovery of hydrochloric acid, cinnabar, alembic, and many more which were his work.

So to focus most followed religions in the world and their closeness to scientific discoveries. There is an overlap of proven data as well as contradictions.

Buddhism is considered to be the most friendly and scientific approachable religion. Most people relate Buddha teachings with cosmology, quantum physics which is very difficult to study. The main concern of Buddhism is not to provide people a concept of God but to discover themselves by living far away from the social world and discovering oneself by meditation and calmness. The enlightenment of inner self, following morals in life. It is most spreading in the west as people are facing social anxiety and depression so yoga, meditation becomes a part of a daily lifestyle which surely is considered beneficial in terms of health sciences and psychology. The method of meditation is most followed in the believers of this religion. Buddhism never relates to materialistic things.

It is to be believed that Buddhism encourages the un-attached search of nature that is the journey of finding oneself.

The religious books refer to the word “signs” not clearly science. The text in books can have a literal meaning and contextual meaning. While science has always been in a clear approach while proving and providing innovative ideas.

Hinduism is the third-largest followed religion around the world.  Hinduism is considered the oldest religion.it comprises billions of gods and goddesses specific for different works. Like Shiva (The destroyer), Ganesh (the removal of obstacles), Vishnu (the preserver), Lakshmi (the fortune), and many more. In Hinduism, everything is considered as a god which is scientifically not correct because there is no concept of god in science and if it is, it must be something beyond human reasoning.

Hindus people follow many acts like worshipping cows and drinking, taking bath in its urine even though the urine of an animal contains a huge amount of toxic materials that damage the body. The story of Lord Ganesh when his head was cut off in an accident and his father Lord Shiva placed ahead of the elephant instead is also not proven by science yet.

There are some similarities yet like the concept of time traveling provided when king ravita kakudumi travels about 108 yugas (1yuga = 4 million years) of the earth to meet the creator Brahman. The explanation is that time travel and how time runs differently in different places. The sculptures in Hinduism also support somehow the idea of Darwin’s evolution too.

The greeting system of joining hands together while meeting a person puts pressure points on fingers that are related to one’s brain, eyes, and ears. Holding hands for a long time helps him to remember the other person for a longer time.

Christianity and Islam are the two most followed religions. There are a lot of things common in both of them but the bible has been changed according to time. There have been a lot of contradictions even in two volumes of the bible. Yet the Quran has always been like this for about more than 1400 years since its first day of existence.

The creation of the earth in the first book of the bible:

“That Almighty GOD he created the heaven and earth in 6 days (1 day= 24 hours) ‘

(Book of Genesis Ch. 1)

Quran also says about earth creation:

“Almighty created the earth in 6 ayams”

 (7:54)

(Ayam is referred to youm which means long periods)

Scientists believed that it took a long period of time for a big bang. So science supports the Quran in this regard. Another verse from the Quran:

“We built the sky above with our (special) ability and we are expanding it.”

(51:47)

Modern science supports this that the universe is constantly increasing and expanding.

“He shaped the earth (as) an Ostrich egg

Quran 79:30

Another verse supporting science that Earth is oval like spherical shaped.

Quran says that:

The Qur’an describes that Allah

“Made from water every living thing”

(21:30)

As science proves that without water life cannot be possible and a major part of living bodies are made up of water.

Another Quran verse:

“Verily We created man from a product of wet earth; then placed him as a drop (of seed) in a safe lodging; then We fashioned the drop into a clot, then We fashioned the clot into a little lump, then We fashioned the little lump into bones, then clothed the bones with flesh, and then produced it another creation. So blessed be Allah, the Best of Creators!”

 [23:12-14]

“It is He Who has created you from dust then from a sperm-drop, then from a leech-like clot; then does he get you out (into the light) as a child: then lets you (grow and) reach your age of full strength; then lets you become old, – thought of you there are some who die before; – and lets you reach a term appointed; in order that you may learn wisdom.”

[40:67]

These are the verses from the Quran which clearly describe the creation of men from the first step to the end. Isn’t it strikingly amazing that the discovery of sperm fusion with egg was made in 1876 by Oscar Hertwig?  A huge year later after the holy book.

Islam is a rapidly growing religion. Every religion has its own compatibility with science. Every religion relates to each other too like the creation of mankind from clay is commonly depicted in all major religions, the Creation of the universe, etc. There is always a room for improvement in science who knows at which era science and religion might become two whole different discussions. Man is evolving logically in time.

Every religion has its own theories that relate it to science and contradicts too. Science and religion compatibility is a topic that is so in discussion these days. Yet we can say that religion might be a mixture of both the natural and supernatural world while science is totally dependent on the natural world around us.

“Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.”
