It is not that easy or obvious to understand time as it sounds. Time itself is the weirdest thing on this planet. It is all around us, every second of every day. We neither can see it nor can touch it, but still, it’s something dynamic that rules our lives with absolute control; and we all are enclosed at this moment that we call “Now”.

Some sane minds consider time as the unseen fourth dimension. Time is considered as an idea or an abstraction that our brain use in order to do something much more fundamental that is deal with the real things that confront us. The human brain organizes the events happening around us in a sequence according to a principle that we happen to call time.

Many scientists believe that the time started with the Big bang, an explosion that created the universe billions of years ago. It takes one second for light to pass 186000 miles which means everything we see up in the sky is a delayed image from the past. The farther away things we see in the celestial sphere are in fact we are looking farther back in time. The sun we see is actually the sun it was 8 minutes ago.  So, the instantaneous view that we have of the entire universe on the celestial sphere (during nighttime sky) is really a collection of all these objects at once all at different distances and therefore all at different times.

Concepts are the keystones in the architecture of our thinking, and when we talk about the concept of “Time travel” it is genuinely a magic concept. It is one of the most fascinating and favorite topics to write about because most of our wildest fantasies rely on time travel.

Origin Of Time Travel:

Time travel is not a concept of today’s modern world but we find this concept in various religions and mythologies. In (chapter 17, verse 01) of “Quran – the Holy book of Muslims”; the possibilities of travel through time has mentioned.

Moreover, we also find the origin of time travel in eastern spiritualism. Buddhist and Hindu mythology both contain characters that jump forward or backward in time.

Similarly, Nihongi, a classic work of Japanese history from 720 AD depicts a character that leaves 300 years into the future.

In the 20th Century, the famous stories like “A Christmas Carol, Looking backward, and Rip Van Winkle” laid the foundation for the novella that pushed time travel into mainstream knowledge. These stories played a role of a catalyst for the real scientists to take notice; thus moving time travel from mere speculation to theoretical possibility.

Thereafter, the discovery of relativity provided a framework for time travel which boosted up the craziest time travel hypothesis to raised and considered to this day.

We all travel in time. According to the mass opinion, the time passes at a steady rate, which means a minute in London is equal to a minute in New York, or Moscow, or Tokyo, or even to a minute at the Moon. It’s perfectly natural to consider the time been fixed, but the reality is totally opposite to what we believe. In fact, time passes at different rates in different places. There are places in the universe where the time passes slowly, and if you’ve to visit such a place you’d actually get old less quickly comparative to the rest of us. One of the special connection between relativity and time travel was the knowledge that the speed of light is unaffected by time.

In 1905, the great 20th-century scientist Albert Einstein came up with the theory of Special relativity. According to the theory of special relativity when a person or an object moves through space-time with a speed approximately equal to the speed of light, time passes slower for such person as compared to other people or objects. In 1971, scientists have proven this by placing clocks onboard commercial airplanes; the experiment resulted in that upon landing the clocks show different times than clocks on earth. The concept not only attracted the time travel enthusiasts but also provided their fantasies with a scientific cred.

Another remarkable theory conceived by Einstein was the theory called General Relativity. According to this theory, time passes at a different rate with respect to gravitational fields; which means time passes at a different rate in gravitational fields of the earth than for objects far from the gravitational fields. Therefore, a person travels in the spaceship or occupies a planet with a stronger gravitational pull that will age slower than those of us living on earth. Although it was associated much with astronomy, the gist of the theory is that the space is inseparable from time. Space is the time that moves at the speed of light and we are all riding its continuum. This means time is different depending on one’s speed and position in the universe.  The theory proved that space and time are aspects of the same thing i.e. space-time. Moreover, time distortions are present near black holes due to intense gravitational fields.

His theory completely changed the view of how time works; according to him if a person leaves earth and race out into space at the speed of light i.e. nearly 186000 miles per second, time will slow down to almost stationary. The reason scientists consider the speed of light the speed limit because they couldn’t experimentally find anything exceeding the speed of light.

Another sense possibility is a cosmic freak show which is a much-theorized portal through space called a wormhole.


A wormhole is basically a thin tube of space, which acts as a tunnel through space connecting one region of space to another region, potentially very far away. Wormhole provides a shortcut of billions of light-years, separating the farthest ends of the universe. It means a person getting into the wormhole from one end will pop out somewhere else in the universe bypassing the distance of billions of light-years. Considering the speed of light a speed limit, the wormhole provides a way to get where we want to reach much faster by shortening the fathomless distances. A wormhole may empty into another time because wormholes are portals through the fabric of space and time. Wormholes could theoretically link different locations in space. They could also theoretically link different locations in time because space and time are co-related.

The concept of wormhole describes that one could actually not end up in a different part of space by going through the wormhole, but it could also take a person in a different part of the time. Due to this reason wormholes have found a special place in science fiction.

In a universe so vast, is there any hope of traveling fast enough so that we could visit the far-off realms of space? Can we travel backward in time? Will we ever be able to hoist a flag in the most distant quadrants of the cosmos? The answer to these questions is mind-boggling.

There are different scientific arguments regarding the creation of a time machine. The pessimists argue that it is impossible to generate such a high magnitude because of the limitation of modern technology. According to Mr. Louis Friedman, the Founder and Executive Director of “The Planetary Society”; human beings are not going to achieve interstellar flight in this century, but still it hasn’t stopped scientists from imagining the theoretical possibilities of interstellar travel. There are possibilities to achieve mankind’s craziest desire of time travel because the optimists say that the time dilation is proof to manipulate time.


A time machine is a concept that could transport us to a frightening future or a happier past. It’s a mechanism scientists wish for every day because it can help mankind to recapture yesterday or explore tomorrow or whichever may one desire for. A time machine could realize all of one’s dreams, so it’s not a surprise that many people most important scientists have endeavored to make this ultimate fantasy a reality.

Is there any such thing like a time machine we can hop into and roll-off through the cosmic calendar in any direction? The answer is “No! Not yet”. Indeed, the development of such a machine has yet to accomplish. But the invention of such a machine is possible; maybe next year or maybe the next decade or maybe in the next hundred years. No one knows what exactly but what if we have one! If we have such an astonishing machine or a mechanism that can travel through time generating huge energy & speed, there will be thousands of amazing things waiting for us between all the ticks and tocks of time.

A successful time journey is manageable by creating a process or a machine that could manipulate space-time. The possibility of time travel to the future does exist, but we need advancement in technology to achieve this because a journey of future travel would consume an extraordinary amount of energy.

Einstein’s theory of relativity only permits time travel into the future. But if we go back in time, can we also change the shape of things to come once we get there! Can we change the courses of history? This question puzzles scientists, writers, physicists, and other intellectuals. Many physicists believe that it’s impossible to travel back in time, but there are some who believes that even we ever create a device that could help us to travel back in time we couldn’t significantly affect the past because a small change in the past could have collateral consequences in the future. Moreover, not only the concept of cause and effect will lose its meaning but also it will violate the law of causality.

According to some scientists, two-way time travel is possible inside one of the greatest mysteries in the universe i.e. inside black holes. The gravitational forces are very strong in the black holes which let nothing to escape from it, not even the light. Scientists consider black holes as cosmic drains sucking chunks of this universe and shooting them through another time-space.

One of the biggest minds of this century, the great Stephen Hawkins in his book “Brief Answers to the Big Questions” expressed that time travel could be possible one day, and it’s more likely than the existence of God. The “M-theory” kept him optimistic and hopeful to believe that travel through time could be achieved.

Whether we use any black hole or a mechanism to manipulate time or a time machine, we all have to wait a while before we can actually physically travel back and forth in time but we still can believe our imaginative speculative mind. 

Nothing is impossible. Mankind has achieved the legacy of advancement, we have worked in orbit above the earth, and we have left our footprints on the moon, now we are sending our satellites to Mars. The positive approach to attain this zenith of achievement is indeed possible with the advancement in technology.

The homo-sapiens are pretty smart creatures. We have learned how to cross space with only mathematics and engineering, and slowly and surely we are learning how to move across time as well. With our minds, our imaginations, our books, our movies, and our dreams might one day create a real machine to tame the fourth dimension.
